Reproduction in Plants

Exercises
Sr NO.QuestionAnswer
1.Fill in the blanks
(a) Production of new individuals from the vegetative part of parent isc alled________. Asexual Reproduction.
(b) A flower may have either male or female reproductive parts. Such a flower is called_____________. Unisexual Flowers
(c) The transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of the same or of another flower of the same kind is known as _____________. Pollination.
(d) The fusion of male and female gametes is termed as _____________. Fertilisation.
(e) Seed dispersal takes place by means of _____________, _____________ and _____________. Wind, Water and animals.
2Describe the different methods of asexual reproduction. Give examples.
(a) Vegitative Propagation.
In Vegetative propagation new plants are produced from roots, stems, leaves and buds.
Eg: Rose, Potato, Cacti
(b). Budding.
When sufficient nutrients are made available to such organism, these grow and multiply every few hours.
Eg: Yeast.
(c), Fragmentation.
When water and nutrients are available some organism grow and multiply rapidly by fragmentation.
Eg: Algae.
(d). Spore formation.
Some plants grow from spores which are present in the air.
Eg: Fungi.
3. Explain what you understand by sexual reproduction. In plants sexual reproduction means zygote formation and later into an embryo by means of transportation of pollen grain from male reproductive organ in a flower named stamen into female organ of a flower of the same plant or another plant named pistil.
4. State the main difference between asexual and sexual reproduction.
Asexual ReproductionAsexual Reproduction
New plants are obtained without production of seeds or spores. New plants are obtained from seeds.
Take less time to grow and bear flowers and fruits earlier than those produced from seeds. Take more time to grow and bear flowers and fruits.
The new plants are exact copies of the parent plant, as they are produced from a single parent. Have characters of both the parents.
Plants reproduce means of various methods. Like Vegitative propagation, budding, fragmentation and spore formation. Plants reproduce by means of one method called pollination.
5. Explain the difference between self-pollination and cross-pollination.
Self-pollinationCross-pollination
If the pollen lands on the stigma of the same flower it is called self-pollination. When the pollen of a flower lands on the stigma of another flower of the same plant, or that of a different plant of the same kind, it is called cross-pollination.
6. How does the process of fertilisation take place in flowers? Pollination is happened by transfer of pollen from anther to the stigma of a flower through either self pollination or cross pollination. As a result a cell is formed which is called Zygote. Thus zygote formation is called fertilization. The zygote develops into an embryo.
7 Describe the various ways by which seeds are dispersed. Seed are disbursed by wind, water and animals.
Disbursal of seed by wind
Winged seeds blown off with the wind to far away places.
Disbursal of seed by water
Some fruits or seeds usually develop floating ability in the form of spongy or fibrous outer coat as in coconut.
Disbursal of seed by animals
Especially spiny seeds with hooks which get attached to the bodies of animals and are carried to distant places.
